Learn how strategic diagrams developed on Aposphere Insight are used to protect hawksbill sea turtles.

A strategic plan for the protection of the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles is developed on Aposphere Insight.

Causal relationships are modelled visually (diagrams) to determine what work generates maximum impact. Work progress (workplan) and impact performance (Key Performance Indicators, KPI) are continuously followed throughout the project lifecycle.

The planning was originally done according to the WildTeam Standard (CC BY-SA 4.0). However, thanks to Aposphere Insight’s configurability, also the widely used Conservation Standard 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) can be used instead.


A live dashboard summarizes the relevant information on a single page, for executives, team members, and donors, to create common awareness.

The shown dashboard focuses on one of the targets, showing the objectives and their indicators with the connected data sources. Furthermore, the ingoing and outgoing connections of the box are displayed as well for additional context.


The analysis of the current situation begins by creating a situation model diagram that adheres to the standard's rules. This diagram effectively captures and models the various elements of the existing scenario, ensuring a comprehensive representation of the present state.

The strategic diagram prominently displays the project's targets within the project scope on the right-hand side. Positioned on their left are the threats identified by the planning team, along with their corresponding contributing factors. Each box within the diagram is enriched with additional information, such as descriptions or relevant files, providing comprehensive context and details for better understanding and decision-making.

A theory of change is derived from the situation model and modeled in a separate results chain diagram.

Objectives are added to targets and evaluated through indicators for the assessment of the created impact.

The workplan editor is integrated directly in the diagram editor allowing to link the required work with the expected strategic impact.

Stories and attachments can be shared directly in the right context in the diagram and discussed, using the collaboration features.

Data Integration

Indicators are used to evaluate the targets’ performances – or in other words, the generated impact.

Live data is provided to the indicators through Aposphere Insight's DataHub.

The DataHub serves as a centralized repository that establishes connections with open databases such as UNSDG, Worldbank, Our World In Data, and personal cloud storage platforms including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, among others. It facilitates seamless access to these resources within Aposphere Insight.

Furthermore, the DataHub enables the creation and sharing of datasets directly on Aposphere Insight. This can be accomplished using the DataMaker, which allows for the modeling of datasets as tabular data. Additionally, the SurveyMaker feature empowers users to publish surveys for employees, team members, and the general public. The responses collected through surveys are automatically transformed into datasets and seamlessly integrated into the strategic diagrams, enhancing the availability of relevant data for decision-making processes.

This use case of the Hawksbill Turtles project has been provided by the WildTeam UK. It was originally planned using the WildTeam Standard (CC BY-SA 4.0) however, as we show here, the same can also be achieved using the Conservation Standard 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0).
